The creation of this piece was caused by cutting a sheet of Arches Watercolor paper in which Jeffery sliced his finger with it. It bled on the paper by accident from the cut while slicing sheets. The blood fell onto a few sheets and this one in particular had a shape of the heart. Which can be found in the center of the piece. So I felt the desire to add an angel also in blood surrounding it. While I bandaged my finger and the blood dried. I was thinking of my greatest loves “MAGIC”. During that time I was looking at different magic books from my collections which showed an early form of a Magic Lantern and came across the drawing by Giovanni Fontana’s in 1420 depicting a nun using a magic lantern projecting a winged female demon. Although not intentional I elaborated on it keeping in mind of Phantasmagoria which is a form of horror theatre which was used to create fear. Also knowing the tale of Jean-Eugene Robert Houdin the father of modern magic and his Magic trip to Algeria to stop a war. I combined these three stories consisting of bloodshed, the magic lantern drawing and the magic trip to Algeria to prevent war for my piece titled “The magic sacrifice to prevent bloodshed”. In some ways true to magic it consists of 3 acts. The Pledge. The Turn. The Prestige. Which in some ways makes it seem even more magical.
